Jackson State waits on Terry running back prospect

JACKSON, Mississippi -- The fax machine is still warm in the Jackson State football office.

One of the letters of intent it hopes to come through is Robert Johnson IV, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound running back from Terry. JSU signed 12 players on Wednesday, totaling 17 who make up the 2014 class so far.

The Tigers are losing starter Tommy Gooden, who was 81 yards shy of breaching the 1,000-yard rushing mark last season. They are returning Rakeem Sims, who exploded in the scene in 2012 but had a quiet 2013 season. And former Terry star Jarius Moore is expected to handle some carries next season.

Moore and Terry linebacker Jonathan Burnett, a Jackson State signee, may give the Tigers some edge for Johnson, who had visits with West Point and the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

BOGALUSA, Louisiana -- Bogalusa defensive football players Jalen Graves and Cederic Porter celebrated Wednesday’s National Signing Day by inking with Prairie View A&M.

Graves, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound defensive tackle, was the District 8-3A defensive Most Valuable Player this season and was named a Class 3A all-state honorable mention player.

Graves said the decision was tough, but felt at home at Prairie View and had a good connection with the coach.

Graves said his big-gest strength is his power.

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  --  The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics is excited to announce 15 signings of national letters of intent to play football at Winston-Salem State university in the fall of 2014.

"Our success has been up front in the past few seasons, both on the offensive and defensive front
, with a few athletes on the back end. So we tried to address some of those needs to make sure we have enough beef up font on both sides of the ball", added Boulware.

We still have one or two more high school kids that we want to target, but we honestly have to see who didn't get signed by the larger programs before we can make that assessment", says Boulware.

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas Southern Tigers' football schedule is set for the 2014 season.

TSU will start its third season at the 22,000 seat BBVA Compass stadium with six home games.

Texas Southern will host Texas College on Thursday, September 4th as the first home game of 2014.

"We added Texas College to complete our six home games for the season," said Dr. Charles McClelland, TSU athletics director. "We originally scheduled another FCS team but had to make adjustments because of scheduling conflicts. We appreciate Texas College agreeing to play at this late hour."

The rest of TSU's home schedule includes Alabama A&M on September 20th, Mississippi Valley on October 4th, then Arkansas-Pine Bluff for homecoming on October 25th, Grambling State on November 1st and we end the season with Jackson State on November 15th.

"I believe we have put together a schedule that benefits our season card holders and gives our fans plenty of opportunities to come out and support the Tigers football program and the university," Dr. McClelland said.

The first game of the season is the Labor Day Classic against Prairie View A&M. This season the game will be played on Sunday, August 31st in Reliant Stadium.

"Prairie View game is big for us," said TSU football head coach Darrell Asberry. "We understand the magnitude of this match-up and we will be ready."

The Tigers will play their second non-conference game against Central State (Ohio) on September 13 on the road. TSU also travels to Alabama State, Alcorn and Southern.

"We are really excited about the six home games, and the opportunity to show-off our talent in front of our fans," Asberry said. "We believe our 2014 recruits along with our previous two classes will put us in position to experience greater success."

Texas Southern's home games will again be broadcasted live on KHOU-TV Digital channel 11.2 the Bounce and taped delayed on Comcast SportsNet.

Kate Morris' Late Three-Run Bomb Lifts TSU Tigers Over ETSU

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Kate Morris delivered a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to lead the Tigers to victory to open the 2014 season. Tennessee State secured a 3-2 win over East Tennessee State at the Music City Classic on a frigid Friday afternoon.

The temperature sat at 28 degrees as both teams took the field at Draper Field at Smith Stadium.  ETSU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run off of TSU starter Olivia Gamache. The senior pitcher tried to hold ETSU at bay, but was charged with a second run in the fourth inning.

The Tigers struggled to get anything going against ETSU freshman pitcher Taylor Carter. Kate Morris collected the lone Tiger hit off Carter, a double to left center, in the second until the sixth inning. Carter would fan the first batters she faced in the sixth, before TSU mounted a two-out rally.

Ashley Haynes hit a ball back up the middle that Carter tried to backhand. The ball glanced off the tip of her outstretched glove and directed the ball away from shortstop Latosha Rectenwald. Lindsey Burgess followed with a line drive single to centerfield pushing Haynes to second and setting up the clutch at bat by Morris. The junior stepped up and drove a 2-0 pitch high over the wall in left center to clear the bases and give TSU the 3-2 advantage.

The Tigers then relied on Kate’s twin sister, Shea Morris, and the defense to close out ETSU. The pitching Morris entered the game in relief of Gamache in the fourth inning and shut down the Bucs over the final 3.2 innings to earn the win. Morris (1-0) earned the win as she surrendered one hit on her way to striking out six.

Gamache allowed five hits and no earned runs, while fanning three in her 3.1 innings of work.

Carter (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out five and giving up five hits.

Kate Morris finished the game 2-for-3 with a run, a double, a homerun and three runs batted in.

Haynes, Burgess and freshman Courtney Gearlds each finished 1-for-3 on the day.

The Tigers will face #32 Virginia Tech at 12:30pm and Lipscomb at 5:30pm. Both games will be played at Lipscomb and can be heard live on TSUTigers.com.

FAMU approves contract for new president

Dr. Elmira Mangum
TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- FAMU trustees approved Friday a three-year contract for new President Elmira Mangum that comes with an annual base salary of $425,000.

Trustees at Florida A&M University spent nearly three and a half hours debating how much Mangum should be paid and what other sorts of financial compensation she should receive during and after her tenure as the university's first female president.

Early last month, the board of trustees chose Mangum, a vice president at Cornell University, to replace former President James Ammons. Ammons was pushed out in 2012 amid a growing scandal over the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion and other problems.

On Friday, the board made several changes to a contract that Mangum already had agreed to. While many changes were minor, the board deleted a $1,000-a-month car allowance and slashed the amount of money she would receive if she decided to teach at FAMU after leaving the presidency.

NEW ORLEANS -- Xavier University of Louisiana dropped a collective seven games Friday in 9-0 women's and men's victories against city rival Loyola at XU Tennis Center.

It was the first dual match of the spring semester for the Gold Nuggets, who are ranked third in the NAIA, and the home opener for the sixth-ranked Gold Rush (1-1).

Xavier did not lose a game in 10-of-16 matches. The Gold Nuggets won 6-0, 6-0 in 5-of-6 singles matches. Loyola defaulted two men's matches because it had five available players.

Winning 6-0, 6-0 in singles for the Gold Rush were Vincenzo Ciccone and Adam Albrecht. The Nuggets' 6-0, 6-0 winners were Nour Abbes, Brion Flowers, Amber Brown, Brandi Nelson and Sha'Nel Bruins. Albrecht, Abbes, Nelson and Bruins are freshmen, and it was the collegiate debut of Abbes.

"It was really good to finally get the women out in a match and let them get any jitters out of the way," 11th-year XU coach Alan Green said. "Everybody was excited and ready to play.

"Neither one of our teams gave up many games, but we have to realize it's not always going to be like that because of the tough schedules we'll play."

Kyle Montrel and Nikita Soifer defeated Federico Mercado and David Mayhall 8-1 at men's No. 1 doubles, then Montrel won 6-0, 3-0 at No. 1 singles when Mercado retired because of injury. Montrel has won 11 of his last 12 singles matches and 11 of his last 12 doubles matches. Soifer has won 21 of his last 23 in doubles.

Both Loyola teams are 1-2.

The Gold Nuggets will play another city rival, Tulane, at 4 p.m. Sunday at City Park Tennis Center. Start time has been pushed up two hours. The next Gold Rush dual will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Louisiana-Lafayette.

LADY PIRATES

HAMPTON, Virginia The Hampton University women's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday following a four-game road swing, and the Lady Pirates will square off against rival Howard at 4 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (18-4, 9-0 MEAC) picked up their eighth straight win on Monday, dismantling Morgan State 90-46 in Baltimore, Md. behind a game-high 22 points from senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.), who also grabbed eight rebounds.

Bennett is 46 points shy of breaking the 1,000-point mark for her career; she would be the 25th player in program history to reach that milestone.

Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) and senior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) each added 17 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) scored 15 points for her eighth double-digit scoring effort in the last 10 games.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) added seven points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Bison (9-12, 5-3 MEAC) were picked to finish fifth in the MEAC this season, and Howard had a two-game winning streak snapped with a 69-48 loss to North Carolina A&T on Monday. Howard, in its first season under head coach Tennille S. Adams, is led by redshirt-freshman guard Te'Shya Heslip, who is averaging a team-best 13.5 points per game.

The Lady Pirates are 26-20 all-time against Howard, and the Lady Pirates have won each of the last 10 meetings — including all three last season (which included a 59-38 win in the championship game of the MEAC Tournament). Howard last defeated Hampton on Dec. 5, 2009 in Washington, D.C., and the Lady Pirates are 12-6 against Howard at home.

Hampton is 304-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 26-20 mark against Howard — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.

Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 39 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games. Their 33-game MEAC regular-season winning streak is currently tied for the longest in the nation, along with Albany.

The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under head coach David Six, they are 45-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, falling to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American back on Dec. 4. Hampton is 8-1 at home this season after defeating Morgan State 99-45 on Jan. 20, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 15 home MEAC games.

PIRATES

Coming off a road trip in which it went 3-1, the Hampton University men's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday to square off against rival Howard at 6 p.m.

The Pirates (11-11, 6-3 MEAC) dropped their first MEAC road game of the season on Monday, falling in double overtime to Morgan State 94-92. Senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.), the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the Pirates with 25 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) added 15 points, while sophomore guard Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.) chipped in 11 points. Sophomore forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) added nine points and six rebounds for the Pirates.

Hampton is 31-5 all-time against Howard, and the Pirates have won each of the last seven meetings between the two teams. In fact, Nickelberry has yet to defeat his former team in six match-ups. Howard's last win over the Pirates came in the 2009 Big Apple Classic in New York, when Howard won 56-54.

The Pirates are 13-1 against Howard at home since moving up to Div. I in 1995.

Hampton is 214-129 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. The Pirates are 6-3 in the MEAC this season after falling to Morgan State in double overtime on Monday.

The Pirates won their first conference home game of the season on Dec. 7, beating Florida A&M 72-62, before beating Bethune-Cookman 85-52 on Dec. 9. Hampton also won home games on Dec. 29 and Jan. 4, a double-overtime 101-95 victory over Winthrop and an 87-60 win over Radford, before falling 71-68 to Coppin State on Jan. 18 and 80-71 to Morgan State on Jan. 20.

Hampton is 2-2 in conference home games so far this season.

FSU Broncos Ink 13 on Signing Day

$
0
0
FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina  -- National Signing Day went as well as one could expect for the Fayetteville State University football team and Head Coach Lawrence Kershaw on Wednesday. The Broncos landed 13 recruits' National Letters of Intent, with a couple more signings potentially on the way.

"Last year when we came in, we got a late start and I thought we did a good job of recruiting," said Kershaw, who went 6-4 in his first season as FSU head coach. "This year, we were able to start early and get some guys to a couple of our games. We got out in front of it."

There were a couple key areas the Broncos wanted to strengthen. One of those is wide receiver, and the FSU staff clearly stocked its roster at that position. FSU inked four receivers on Signing Day.

"For us offensively, we're a four-wide offense," Kershaw said. "We have to have an abundance of wide receivers. We probably have four or five guys that'll have 500 receiving yards or more."

Marcus Jenkins was the first of the 2014 class to officially commit to the Broncos, faxing in his National Letter of Intent at 8:27 am. Jenkins, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound wide receiver from Asheville, NC, and TC Roberson High School, is very quick and made plays out of the slot while in high school.

As his highlight reel shows, Jenkins is tough to bring down when given space in the open field; such as on screens. He also returned kicks and punts and runs track & field.

Jenkins caught 62 passes for 879 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year of high school ball.

Marcus Jenkins Online Profile

Fred McDuffie sent in his Letter of Intent shortly after Jenkins. McDuffie, a 6-foot 190-pound wide receiver from Southeast Raleigh High School, was an All-Conference performer in high school. A possessor of a 4.41 40-yard dash time, McDuffie has breakaway speed when given space.

In an upset of Clayton High School last season, McDuffie caught a 48-yard touchdown pass and returned a kick 99 yards for a score. He is a sprinter and a basketball player in high school, as well.

"He's a bigger guy who makes plays all over the field," said Calvin Randall, FSU's receivers coach.

Fred McDuffie Online Profile

Avery Redden, a 6-foot 175-pound receiver from Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville, committed on Wednesday. Redden is a three-year basketball letterman who played just one season of high school football.

In that season, though, Redden excelled enough to get noticed by the Fayetteville State coaching staff. His highlight reel shows he quickly learned the ability to get open, make people miss and fight through tackles.

Redden finished his senior season with 47 catches, 665 receiving yards and six touchdown receptions. FSU coach Lawrence Kershaw believes that as Redden continues to learn the game of football, he can excel at the college level.

"He doesn't have a whole lot of experience but look at his film," Kershaw said. "He can play. He can run and jump; he's fast. He just fits the bill at that spot."

"He's very athletic," Randall said. "He was a forward on the basketball team. His ability to go up and get the football is outstanding."

Avery Redden Online Profile

Maleek Gorham also joined the program at wide-out. Gorham, who stands 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, played running back and cornerback and returned punts and kicks at D.H. Conley High School (Greenville, NC). His highlight tape is full of outstanding runs.

At FSU, he will shift to the wide receiver position; where FSU coach Lawrence Kershaw believes his speed and cutting ability can excel. As a senior, Gorham gained 394 yards on 56 carries in six games. He also scored five times on the ground.

Gorham led Conley in receiving yards despite just catching three passes. Those receptions totaled 176 yards (58.7 yards per catch) and one touchdown.

"He's dangerous as soon as he catches the football," Randall said. "He's an unbelievable playmaker with great speed."

Speed is one common trait for all these receivers. It's a product of Kershaw's four-wide offense to spread the field and coach believes they'll each be able to do so at the college level.

"They're fast," Kershaw said. "That's the No. 1 thing we look for: speed. You've got to be able to run and make plays. We want guys that are fast and guys that are athletic."

Maleek Gorham Online Profile

Athleticism describes Brenton Flowers perfectly. Flowers, a six-foot 170-poud quarterback from Richmond Senior High School, ran a 4.56 40-yard dash and participate in track and field. As evidenced by his highlights, Flowers has the ability to both throw on the run and create plays with his feet.

In his senior year, Flowers completed 50-of-106 passes for 948 yards, nine touchdowns and just one interception. He was lethal when he carried the football, compiling 832 yards on 89 carries. He scored 10 touchdowns on the ground.

"He's a very smart young man and a big-time leader," said Randall, who also coaches the quarterbacks.

Brenton Flowers Online Profile

Raquan Jones, a 6-foot-1 180-pound defensive back from Eastern Guilford High School in Gibsonville, NC, joins the FSU secondary. He is a tall corner that will be an obstacle for opposing quarterbacks.

Jones shifted from wide receiver to free safety and to defensive back in his senior season and was dominant at all three positions. He finished the year with 100 tackles, four interceptions, five passes defended, a sack and three receiving touchdowns. He was named his team's offensive player of the year.

He'll be used as a defensive back at FSU, where Broncos coach Lawrence Kershaw believes his speed and coverage ability can flourish.

"He has the size and athletic ability to be a big-time player," defensive coordinator Errick Hargrove said.

"He's a cover corner," Kershaw said. "He can get it done there. Anytime you can get a 6-1, 6-2 corner that helps. It makes it tough for a quarterback to throw over him."

Raquan Jones Online Profile

Ralphael Bernard is a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive lineman from Garden City Junior College in Raleigh, NC.

He has the ability to clog up running lanes with his frame and also rush the passer. He had 44 tackles in just seven games last season; while also recording two sacks.

Raphael Bernard Online Profile

Joining Bernard on the line will be 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive tackle Daseion Cole. Cole's highlights show a defensive tackle that is proficient at eating up running lanes of opposing offenses.

His experience blends well with the high school seniors that will be coming into the program.

Deseion Cole Online Profile

Justin Hooks is a 6-foot-4 defensive lineman from Southeast Guilford High School in Greensboro, NC. Hooks averaged four tackles per game last season and figures to be a force on the outside edge of the pass rush at the college level.

At Southeast Guilford, he played end and frequently made things difficult for the opposing quarterback with pressure or batted balls at the line of scrimmage.

Justin Hooks Online Profile

James York comes to Fayetteville State from College of the Desert (California), where the 6-foot-5 240-pounder saw most of his time at defensive end.

At FSU, York will move to outside linebacker and still see time on the line in different formations. Theron Jones, the outside linebackers coach at FSU, is excited by York's potential. He believes York can step in and provide an immediate impact.

"He's athletic and physical," Jones said. "He's a guy who can stand up or put his hand down. He brings in a good blend that will go with the younger players we have coming in. We believe he'll make his mark on Bronco football immediately."

"We're beefing up the defensive line," Kershaw said. "Bernard and Cole fill an immediate need for us. We needed to get bigger and they fit the bill. James York is an outside backer; but he's just a superior, talented kid. We're really looking for him to come in and have a big year."

James York Online Profile

Jertaves Jenkins joins the FSU program out of South Central High School in Winterville, NC. Jenkins had some Division I interest but chose the Broncos, where he could immediately make his presence felt.

At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Jenkins has the prototypical frame for an outside linebacker; the position he'll play at Fayetteville State. He also saw some time at running back while at South Central.

"He's a big, tall kid," outside linebackers coach Theron Jones said. "He fits the mold we're looking for. We expect an immediate impact. Anytime you can get a high-caliber kid, you're excited by him being in your program."

Jertaves Jenkins Online Profile

FSU also landing the commitment of Scotland County High School (Laurinburg, NC)'s Marquis Williams.

Williams, a 6-foot-2 220-pound middle linebacker, had 117 tackles for the Fighting Scots team that went 15-1 and advanced all the way to the 4A state championship game.

His ability to lead a defense and read the play as its developing is clearly present on his highlight reel.

Last but not least, the Broncos inked the commitment of Brian Jones, a 6-foot 280-pound center from Santa Rosa Junior College.

With Jones, FSU gets a quick big offensive lineman that Kershaw hopes can pay big dividends for the Broncos.

"He's very physical," Kershaw said. "He's extremely quick and he's extremely physical. He has a high motor. When we looked at him on film, we knew we had to go after him."

Brian Jones Online Profile

The FSU football staff believes, it was a good class designed to both fill any minor holes and have this team in position to compete for a CIAA championship.

"We're in good shape," Kershaw said. "We just had to fill a few holes. Now we're in good shape."

Fayetteville State is the second-oldest public institution in North Carolina. A member of the University of North Carolina System, FSU has nearly 6,000 students and offers degrees in more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

FAIRFIELD, Alabama Following a Miles College 6-4 campaign and an SIAC Western Division Title in 2013 including the Golden Bears second trip to the SIAC Football Championship in the last three years, MC head coach Reginald Ruffin and his staff announced the names of 35 future Golden Bears that make up the 2014 recruiting class.

The Golden Bears class includes 18 defensive players, 16 offensive players and one specialist from four different states. MC added 23 recruits from Alabama, nine from Georgia and one signee apiece from Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.

"I feel really good about this 2014 group," Ruffin said. "We stayed close to home as Alabama dominated the list. We felt that we needed to get bigger in the interior of our defensive line and we addressed the need in that area. I feel good that every kid on the list will be able to come in and develop and help us."

Miles College opens 2014 spring practices on Monday, March 3rd with the annual spring game set for Saturday, March 22nd at Albert J. Sloan Stadium in Fairfield, Alabama.

TUSKEGEE, Alabama  -- The Tuskegee University Department of Athletics has announced the signing of 21 student-athletes today who have intentions of playing football under Coach Willie Slater this Fall.  The student-athletes were signed from five different states, with Georgia and Alabama each having seven kids apiece sign with the school, leading all states.

"Today was a great day," Slater said.  "We addressed some needs, but we still have some holdouts that we would like to have sign with us.  We hope to accomplish more work, but I like what we have been able to accomplish."

Social media had a major impact on the signing of the student-athletes, as participants from Mill Creek High School in Georgia and Miami Central High School in Florida were captured on camera making their declaration.

Three different college transfer players signed from three different states.  These players include natives of California, Maryland and an additional signee from Fairmount State University in West Virginia.  Slater was also impressed with the variety of high school kids that were able to sign with the team.

"There are college transfers that we signed from different parts of the country," Slater said.  "We also managed to get some high school kids from Miami, too.  I am pleased with how [Recruiting Coordinator] Coach (Kelvin) Powell has worked to find the kids that are the best fit for our program."

The Golden Tigers will begin their 2014 season Sept. 6, as Tuskegee will host Alabama A&M on campus for the first time since 1998.

HAMPTON, VirginiaThe Hampton University women's basketball used a surge in the second half to pull away from rival Howard Saturday evening at the HU Convocation Center, escaping to a 76-64 win to remain unbeaten in MEAC play.

The Lady Pirates (19-4, 10-0 MEAC), winners of nine straight, are one win away from their fifth straight 20-win season. Hampton has won its last 16 home MEAC games, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 40 games against MEAC foes (including conference tournament games).

Junior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 24 points – 20 of which came in the second half – going 8-for-15 from the floor and hitting three of her seven 3-pointers. Senior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 14 points and four assists.

Senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) and freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) each added 13 points, and Bennett grabbed 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

The game was tied at 43-43 with 13:35 left in the second half, thanks to a jumper from Cheyenne Brown, but the Lady Pirates responded by scoring 13 of the next 15 points, taking a 56-45 lead after a layup from redshirt-sophomore forward Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.).

Cole scored four points in that run.

Howard answered that run with the next five points, closing the gap to 56-50 on a 3-pointer from Te'Shya Helsip with 7:58 remaining, but Cole had the answer, recording a free throw, a 3-pointer, and a breakaway layup to put Hampton up 62-50 with 6:22 left in the game.

Two Bennett free throws with 3:52 left gave the Lady Pirates a 65-52 lead.

Howard went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 65-58 on a Victoria Gonzalez layup with 2:33 to go, but a Hamilton jumper 21 seconds later gave the Lady Pirates a 68-58 lead. Shavonne Duckett hit a jumper with 1:17 left to cut the lead to 70-62, but Cole answered with the dagger 20 seconds later, hitting a trey from the wing to give Hampton a 73-62 lead.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring four ties and 10 lead changes. A 3-pointer from sophomore guard Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) gave the Lady Pirates a 19-15 lead at the 11:36 mark, before Duckett went on a personal 7-0 run to give Howard a 22-19 lead with 9:39 left in the half.

Jasmine Hill put the Bison up 25-21 with a trey at the 7:19 mark, before a 4-0 Hampton spurt tied the game at 25-25 after Cole hit two free throws. Heslip gave Howard a 28-25 lead with a 3-pointer at the 5:19 mark, but a 7-1 Hampton run put the Lady Pirates up 32-29 with 2:13 left in the half after Ward hit a jumper.

Cole gave the Lady Pirates a 36-31 lead (Hampton's largest lead of the half) with 32 seconds left in the half on a free throw, before Allese Morrison hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to cut that lead to 36-33.

Hampton took that lead into the half; the Lady Pirates are 17-0 this season when leading at halftime.

The Lady Pirates shot 35.9 percent (23-for-64) from the floor and made seven of their 22 3-pointers (31.8 percent). Hampton out-rebounded Howard 45-38, and the Lady Pirates turned 18 Howard turnovers into 18 points.

Hampton also held a 22-12 edge in points in the paint.

Howard (9-13, 5-4 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and hit seven of its 15 3-pointers (46.7 percent).

Duckett led the Bison with 16 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, taking on Maryland Eastern Shore at the HU Convocation Center at 6 p.m. For more information on Hampton University basketball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.

Cougars Hit Double-Digit Win Mark In 81-74 Decision Over Kansas City

WATCH IN 1080p HD, WIDE SCREEN

CHICAGO, Illinois – Thanks to a 27-of-32 performance from the free throw line, Chicago State men's basketball finished a season-series sweep of Kansas City by defeating the Roos 81-74 in a Western Athletic Conference contest at the Jones Convocation Center on Saturday (Feb. 8).

In the previous meeting between the two clubs it was senior Quinton Pippen (Hamburg, Ark./Hamburg) making the game-winning basket with less than two seconds remaining. On Saturday, Pippen was again a main reason for the victory. He finished with a career-high 28 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He made 5-of-6 3-point attempts and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. He also added two steals an assist and committed just one turnover.

Pippen was one of four Cougars in double-digits. Junior Clarke Rosenberg (Skokie, Ill./Evanston Township) added 19 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the free throw line. Senior Nate Duhon (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) scored 11 points and senior Eddie Denard (Chicago, Ill./Foreman) provided 10 points.

The Cougars opened a 34-26 lead at halftime thanks to 13 Kansas City turnovers in the opening period. CSU built their lead to 15 points in the second half on a jumper by Pippen with 15:17 left to make the score 48-33. Less than two minutes later Pippen picked up his fourth foul. When he left the court, Kansas City responded with a 17-4 run to tie the game at 53 with 8:06 remaining. However the Cougars would never trail in the second half. Pippen, back on the court, followed with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Cougars in the lead again. It was the start of a 12-3 run by the Cougars to essentially ice the contest. Chicago State built their lead up to 12 points again and made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.

"Kansas City made their run to tie it up but we didn't give up," Chicago State head coach Tracy Dildy said. "That's the one thing about this team is this group doesn't give up and will keep fighting. That's what you need to win conference games."

The Cougars' success at the line was pivotal as Kansas City earned only five fewer attempts from the charity stripe but made 11 fewer free throws. The Roos shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor while the Cougars finished 44.4 percent (24-of-54) for the contest.

Junior Rahjan Muhammad (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) saw his first action of the season and added two points, two steals, two rebounds and three assists in a starting role.

The victory moves Chicago State to 10-12 (5-3 WAC) on the year. Kansas City falls to 7-15 (4-5 WAC). The Cougars hit the road next week for a pair of WAC contests. First up is UTPA on Thursday (Feb. 13). The game has a 7 p.m. CT start. Chicago State will look to avenge an earlier season loss to the Broncs.

National Signing Day Proves Profitable for Stillman

$
0
0
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Fourteen young men have made the decision to sign with Stillman and join the Tiger football program in 2014.

"Today was a good day," said head coach Teddy Keaton.  "This is going to be a group that can come in and develop themselves, which is something that I really wanted for them.  I am proud of the work that the staff put in."

Spending much of the offseason looking to redefine some roles of returning players, Keaton and the Tigers' staff recruited a number of quality athletes who should fill several needs for the program.

"We had a couple of athletes who will join the program that will be definite upgrades to the team," said Keaton.  "A lot of the credit for this class goes to the coaching staff.  These guys really went out and worked the recruiting trail and today is the culmination of that.  There deserve a lot of the credit today."

1.  Bryan Hypolite (5-11 • DB • Sandersville, Ga. • Washington County "Golden Hawks")
Hypolite should bring athleticism and some height to the Tiger defensive backfield.  He registered 133 total tackles (including 81 solo) and two forced fumbles in his career.  The Golden Hawks, coached by Joel Ingram, were region champs and a state runner-up between 2010-2014.

2.  Ryan Sherman (5-6 • 180 • RB/KR • Powder Springs, Ga. • McEachern "Indians")
Sherman comes to Stillman as a running back/kick returner that looks to bring some inside toughness and speed to the backfield.  He tallied 547 yards and three touchdowns while tallying nearly 300 kick return yards.  He has been clocked with a 4.6 40-yard dash.

3.  Connor Eggleton (5-7 • 160 • WR/PR • Dothan, Ala. • Dothan "Tigers")
Eggleton is a tough-nosed athlete who should be a good complement in both the Tiger's offense and the special teams' scheme.  He has posted times of 4.6 and 4.7 in the 40-yard dash and was named the top receiver and the Step It Up National Elite Camp and was a top performer at Dothan during the 2013 season.

4.  Zeb Finch (6-2 • 310 • OL • Kennedy, Ala. • Pickens County "Tornados")
Finch finished his senior season as a member of the Tuscaloos News Al-Metro Team.  He was a key component of the offensive line that paved the way for running back Jamarcus Brown (1A Alabama State Player of the Year) and the Tornadoes offense.

5.  Jeremie Saffold (5-11 • 186 • LB • Dothan, Ala. • Dothan "Tigers")

GREENSBORO, North Carolina  -- No one said it would be easy but the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team used everything they had to defeat Florida A&M, 82-77 at Corbett Sports Center Saturday evening.

The Aggies (17-4, 7-2 MEAC) placed five players in double figures and shot a solid 55.6 percent from the field in the rematch against FAMU (11-12, 5-5 MEAC).

“I think Florida A&M is one of the better teams in the league from a talent standpoint,” head coach Tarrell Robinson said. “The games that they’ve won have been at home and they’ve struggled on the road but that’s a good team that we beat. They have one of the best scorers in the country but I’m just glad that we got away with a win. I thought our post players gave us great effort today. Everyone who played contributed.”

The Aggies dominated in the paint where they scored 52 points. A&T was led by junior Ariel Bursey who scored 14 points, dished out four assists and had four steals.  Senior DeAndra Davis finished with 13 points, followed by redshirt sophomores Aprill McRae, Eboni Ross and redshirt junior Debbie Smith who all scored 11 points. Smith also led A&T in rebounds with eight.

A&T also did a good job of spreading the ball around by recording 15 assists with seven coming from Christina Carter.

The Aggies defense slowed down the Rattlers in the second half as they cruised on a 16-6 run and took the 52-42 advantage with 15:30 in the game. A&T remained ahead and benefited from three Rattlers fouling out of the game.

A&T took the 70-57 lead with less than six minutes remaining as it looked like it was going to close out the game with no problem. However FAMU fueled a 15-5 run and cut the Aggies lead to 75-72 with 3:30 left. After the timeout Carter and Bursey used a jumper and layup to push A&T’s lead to 79-72. FAMU responded with a three but it wasn’t able to consistently connect on many shots in the final minutes as the Aggies retained control.

Jasmine Grice led all players with 38 points followed by Tanke Rubin who tallied 16 points for FAMU.

From tip-off, the game was packed with a lot of energy from both teams. The Aggies led 13-12 eight minutes into the half until a turnover caused it to trail 14-13. Grice nailed a jumper and a 3-pointer to extend FAMU’s edge to 19-13 with 10:47 left in the half. Both teams exchanged baskets but it was Bursey’s 3-pointer that tied the game at 22 with 7:57 left. Tracy King put the Aggies back on top 33-31 at the 2:11 mark but they found themselves tied at 36 at the end of the half.

A&T struggled handling the ball in the first half as FAMU connected on 21 points off A&T’s 18 turnovers. The Aggies also had to find a way to stop Grice who had already tallied 17 points.

“We prepared all week to work on handling the ball and being more disciplined,” Robinson said. “We still need to improve on that. We didn’t run any gimmick defenses to try and stop Grice. We trust our defense. We know that she’s going to score we just had to make sure that we took care of everyone else and we did. “

The Aggies will host Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Feb. 10 for a league game starting at 6 p.m.
